What To Do In The Two Weeks Following The World Championships

Apr 09, 2024

With a lot of World Championships over, and a few more due to finish in the next week, as Irish dancers, it is important to think about how you will deal with the weeks following such a big event.

As Irish dancers, we spend 12 months thinking about and preparing for the World Championships, and so when they are over it can feel like we have lost a sense of direction - regardless of whether the Worlds went well for us or not.

Here are ten things we want you to do in the two weeks after the World Championships to mentally and physically prepare yourself for the year ahead…

     1. Rest

Getting a lot of mental and physical rest away from the Irish dancing world following the World Championships is important. Without this break, you’ll become more easily overwhelmed in a few months and return to dancing feeling less motivated for the year ahead.

     2. Spend time with family and friends

These next few weeks are a great time to spend with family and friends who we often don’t get to see too much because of busy dancing schedules. So enjoy some downtime, make memories, and have fun!

     3. Set goals

Now that the World Championships are over and the new dance season has started, this is the ideal time to set goals for the next 12 months. Think about WHAT you want to achieve and how you will achieve it - what will you do differently this year to improve your technique over the next 12 months? Our MWM Gold Club has a monthly Goal Setting class where our Mindset Coach Annabelle guides dancers through a 30-minute goal setting class each month.

     4. Work on turning your weaknesses into strengths

Use these few weeks to make a plan as to how you are going to turn your weaknesses into strengths over the next 12 months. If you need to work on your turnout, think about stretches, mobility work, or strength exercises you need to be doing religiously over the next 12 months to turn this particular weaknesses into your strengths.

     5. Evaluate your performance at the World Championships and your preparation

Finally, evaluate how you prepared and danced at the World Championships. What did you do well? What could you have done better? What decisions did you make that you were proud of? How did the morning of the Worlds go? By thinking about what you did well and not so well you can learn to treat yourself with kindness and learn from your mistakes to be better in the future.
