How Parents Can Support Without Pressure

Jun 05, 2025

Let’s be honest, being the parent of an Irish Dancer is not always easy Between early mornings, endless bobby pins, and spending entire weekends at Feises, it can feel like you’ve accidentally enrolled in a part-time job you never applied for. Yet, here you are, cheering from the sidelines as your child is about to step onto the stage. You’re amazing. Truly 👏👏

But here’s the kicker: how do you support your Dancer without turning into That Parent? You know the one…giving additional corrections on the way home, “gently” comparing results, or focusing on the bad results.

So, let’s take a look at how to be the supportive, pressure-free, Dance-parent your child needs.

Be Their Taxi, Not Their Coach 🚗

Leave the technique tweaks to the teacher. Your Dancer doesn’t want to hear you correct their rhythm while you’re unloading the shopping.

Be the ride, the snack-packer, the hug-giver. Those roles? Absolute gold 🥇

Celebrate the Wobble 🙌

Yes, a fall in the middle of a Slip Jig might sting. But here’s the thing - Dancing, like life, isn’t about perfection. It's about showing up, stepping out, and having a blast doing it.

Cheer when they fall. Cheer louder when they get back up. 💪 That resilience? That’s what matters.

Leave the Results at the Door 🚪

Placements come and go, but your child’s love of Dancing is fragile. What sticks with them isn’t what they won, but how you made them feel afterward.

Say this with me:
“Did you have fun?” ✅
“I loved watching you Dance!” ✅
“What did you learn from today?” ✅

Trust the Process (Even When It’s Slow) 🐢

Your Dancer might hit a plateau. They might not move up to the next level as fast as their bestie. That’s okay. Not every flower blooms in March 🌸 - some wait until August and still steal the show 🌻

Let them Dance in their own time. They’re doing just fine. If your Dancer is experiencing a plateau right now, read our blog about how to deal with this here.

Find the Joy 💖

Irish Dancing is full of sparkle, chaos, pride, nerves, and a kind of magic you won’t find anywhere else. Take the videos. Frame the photos. Laugh when the wig falls off. Treasure the mayhem.

Speaking of joy... have you heard about our MWM Festival this August? 🎪

We’re not just creating an unforgettable day for Dancers - though there’ll be plenty of music, movement, and magic 💃 - we’re also planning a full line-up of activities just for YOU, the parents!

Think:
🧘 Relaxation spaces
🎨 Creative workshops
☕ Chill-out zones
👯‍♀️ Parent meet-ups
💬 Talks and panels with experts

It’s your chance to be part of the Irish Dance world without the stress. Just fun, laughter, live music, and good vibes.

To all the parents reading this - you’re doing great ❤️ Your Dancer might not always say it (especially if they’re a teen), but your rides, snacks, hugs, and trips away? They mean the world.

You’re raising a champion - not just on the stage, but in life ☘️
