Do you want to feel better when you're dancing?

How many times have you all heard me talk about the importance of drinking enough water?

 

I must say it about 15x a week - at least!!

But that's because it is super important and sometimes we all need a little reminder to go and get some more water. But, like anything in life, it can be hard to keep up with a helpful habit unless we know the reason why we are doing it and how it can help our dancing. 

 

Drinking enough water is important for every single person on the planet, whether they are a dancer or not. Here's 8 reasons why:

 

  • improves mood
  • keeps you energised 
  • boosts brain power
  • prevents/helps headaches
  • controls body temperature 
  • good for your heart
  • transports nutrients and minerals throughout your body
  • helps fight sickness

 

So before we even start talking about the importance of being well hydrated for you as a dancer, there are so many benefits to drinking enough water as human beings. This is something you can teach everyone at home!

When it comes to Irish dancing, or exercise in general, we tend to work super hard and we require more water than normal. Not drinking enough water can result in:

  • muscle cramps
  • muscle fatigue (tiredness)
  • alter strength levels
  • decreased ability to concentrate
  • heighten risk of injury

 

It has been claimed that even a 2% reduction in the appropriate water intake levels can reduce the dancer's ability to regulate heat loss and cope with the physical demands of dance. 

 

So, how can we make it easier for you to drink more water? 

 

Maybe you go out and buy a fancy new water bottle, maybe you set an intention that after every 15 minutes you go and grab a drink at dance class, maybe keep some water with you when you do your homework, maybe swap one of your other daily drinks for another glass of water, maybe challenge yourself to drink 0.5L more of water in Feb. 

 

We recommend dancers drink 2L water on non-dancing days and an extra 1L on days when we are at dance class and feises.
