Why Irish Dancing is Better with a Crew (and Where to Find Yours)
May 22, 2025Let’s be real: Irish dancing might look like a solo sport, you up there on stage, all focus and footwork, but behind every confident dancer is a whole crowd of people cheering them on, lifting them up, and laughing about that time your zip broke right before the recall.
Here’s the truth: community is the secret ingredient that makes Irish dancing more fun, more fulfilling, and way less stressful.
Your Dance School: The OG Support Squad
It all starts at home - or at least, in your home studio. These are the people who see the blood, sweat and tears. They know exactly how hard you’ve worked, because they’re working just as hard right next to you. They’re your biggest supporters (and occasional giggle-break partners mid-Heavy Jig).
Tip: Be the kind of teammate you’d want to have. The energy you bring to class shapes your whole school’s vibe and you’d be amazed how far a compliment or a “you’ve got this” can go.
Your Competitors: Friends Wearing Other School Colours
Shocker: some of your best dance friendships might be waiting just outside your school bubble.
Feises don’t have to be tense, silent warm-ups and side-eye. They can be full of laughs, borrowed hairspray, and “go get it!” fist bumps. That moment you recognise someone from another comp and catch up in the lineup? Gold.
Reality check: You’re all in this together. Why not enjoy the journey with each other?
The Internet: Surprisingly Wholesome?
Okay, yes, the internet can be… chaotic. But used well? It’s a Dancer’s dream. Whether you’re asking for help in the MWM Gold Club, posting your progress online, or cheering on your Insta dance friends, social media can help you feel seen, heard, and part of something bigger.
And let’s be honest - sometimes it’s just nice to know someone else also fell off their blocks during their set dance at Nationals.
Travelling to Feises: Making Memories (and Friends)
One of the best ways to find your people? Hit the road. Travelling to Feises gives you the chance to meet dancers from all over, laugh over dodgy Feis toilets together, and maybe even form your own backstage “good luck gang.” These connections often last far beyond one competition and suddenly, every major feels like a reunion.
And Then There’s MWM Fest...
If all this sounds like your kind of thing, then you need to be at MWM Fest this August.
This isn’t just a workshop, it’s a full-blown dance party meets summer camp meets mindset recharge. You’ll get to dance with new friends, learn from amazing coaches, and bond over blisters, stretch breaks and post-jig snacks.
Most importantly? You’ll leave with a dance community that feels like family. And when you walk into your next Feis knowing half the room? That kind of support is priceless.
Whether it’s in your school, online, backstage or at MWM Fest - finding your people makes all the difference. Irish dancing is better when you do it together. So go ahead, send the DM, start the convo, join the club. Your future dance besties are waiting.
