Before you’ve even taken a step, the judges already see how you hold yourself. A dancer with tall, confident posture instantly looks stronger, sharper, and more professional. But here’s the truth - posture is one of the hardest things to maintain.
Between hours at school sitting over a desk, carrying heavy bags, and scrolling on phones, your body naturally starts rounding forward. Then, when you get on stage, it feels like a battle to keep your chest lifted, shoulders back, and head tall.
The good news? Just like turnout, kicks, or toe height, posture is a skill you can train and it will completely change the way your dancing looks.

🧎♀️ Kneeling Chest Stretch
This stretch is one of five posture moves inside our free app Move Like a Champion which also has free content to help you improve your turnout and kick height.
This move strengthens your upper back and opens up your chest so you can squeeze your shoulders back and stop leaning forward on stage.
Here’s how to do it:
- 😊 Sit on your knees, pull your belly button in, and tuck your bum to lock in strong posture.
- 👏 Clasp your hands together behind your back.
- ✌️ Pull your hands down first, then slowly lift them up and away to feel the stretch across your chest.
- 👯 Don’t round forwards, lean back, or pop your head forward - stay tall.
- Repeat for 8–10 reps.
This is a perfect posture “reset” move after school, or even at the start of the day.
