Not in a vague "I think it was okay" kind of way. I mean a proper, honest sit-down with yourself. What went well. What didn't. How you felt mentally. What your body was telling you. Whether you moved closer to your goals or drifted a bit.

If the answer is no…you're not alone. Most dancers don't. We're so focused on the next class, the next feis, the next challenge that we rarely pause long enough to learn from the month we just had.

That's exactly why monthly check-ins are one of the most powerful habits you can build as a dancer. Today I'm going to show you why they matter AND give you a simple template you can start using this month ๐Ÿ’š

 

Why Monthly Check-Ins Are a Game Changer

Here's the thing about progress in Irish dancing - it's rarely dramatic. It's not one big leap. It's dozens of tiny, quiet improvements that build on each other over weeks and months…and if you're not pausing to notice them, you'll miss them entirely.

Monthly check-ins help you do four really important things:

  • Celebrate your wins. Even the small ones. ESPECIALLY the small ones. Progress deserves to be acknowledged.
  • Spot patterns. Are you always struggling in the second half of your round? Always feeling low confidence before a feis? Check-ins help you connect the dots.
  • Set intentional goals. Rather than just showing up and hoping for the best, you get to decide what the next month is FOR.
  • Build self-awareness. The dancers who improve fastest aren't always the ones who train the most — they're the ones who understand themselves best.

A monthly check-in doesn't need to take long. Even 20 minutes with a cup of tea and this template can completely shift your focus and your momentum. Let's get into it.

 

How to Use Your Monthly Check-In

Set aside time at the end of each month — the last Sunday works brilliantly. Grab a notebook, find somewhere quiet, and be honest with yourself. There are no right or wrong answers here, just YOUR truth.

A Few Tips to Make This Work For You

Do it at the same time each month. Consistency beats perfection. Even a quick 15-minute check-in is better than skipping it.

Be honest, not harsh. This isn't a place for self-criticism. It's a place for self-awareness. There's a big difference.

Keep your check-ins somewhere you can look back on them. Reading back over six months of check-ins is one of the most motivating things you can do.
