The Power of Prelim: Why This Stage Matters More Than You Think

Apr 09, 2026

There’s a moment in every dancer’s journey where things shift. You move out of the grades… and into something new.

Preliminary Championship.

And suddenly, it can feel like everything has changed.

The standard is higher.
The competition is tougher.
And the results? Sometimes…harder to understand.

If you’re in this stage right now, I want to share something with you that could completely change how you see it:

Prelim is not a waiting room. It’s your training ground 💚

💭 The truth about stepping into Prelim

Moving from grades to Prelim is a BIG step.

It’s not just a new level - it’s a completely different environment.

You’re now dancing alongside:

  • Stronger, more experienced dancers
  • Dancers who have been refining their technique for years
  • Dancers who are closer to Open level than you might realise

So if you’ve stepped into Prelim and thought:

“Why does this feel so much harder?”

👉 It’s because it is.

And that’s exactly why this stage is so important.

⚠️ The mistake dancers make in Prelim

They treat it like something they need to rush through.

They focus on:

  • Winning out quickly
  • Comparing themselves to others
  • Feeling frustrated if results don’t come straight away

But here’s the reality…

Rushing Prelim often means skipping the exact lessons you’ll need in Open.

And those lessons?

They will catch up with you later.

🧠 What Prelim is REALLY here to teach you

This stage is where you learn things you simply can’t learn in the grades.

1. How to refine, not just perform

In grades, progress often comes from learning steps and building confidence.

In Prelim?

👉 It’s about the details.

  • Technique consistency
  • Control in your movements
  • Performance skills
  • Strength and stamina across your fulls

This is where you start becoming a technically aware dancer.

2. How to handle pressure and competition

Prelim introduces a new kind of pressure.

You might not place every time.
You might have to dance on your own.

You may have to dance on the championship stage.

And that can feel tough.

But this is where you learn:

💚 How to stay focused on your performance and yourself
💚 How to bounce back after disappointment
💚 How to build confidence on big stages

These are the exact skills you’ll need at Open.

3. How to understand YOUR dancing

This is one of the most important parts.

Prelim gives you time to figure out:

✨ What your strengths are
✨ What your corrections are
✨ What actually helps YOU improve

Because no two dancers are the same.

👉 And the dancers who succeed long-term are the ones who understand their own bodies, not just follow instructions.

🏁 Why “winning out” isn’t the only goal

Of course, progressing to Open is exciting.

And yes, that’s part of the journey.

But if your only focus is:

“I just want to win out as fast as possible”

You risk missing the bigger picture.

Prelim is what prepares you to THRIVE in Open - not just reach it.

Because getting there is one thing.

Being ready for it?

That’s something completely different.

🤍 Don’t rush this phase of your journey

It can be tempting to feel like you’re behind.

Especially when you see others moving up quickly.

But your journey is yours.

And taking time in Prelim to:

  • Build strength
  • Improve technique
  • Develop your mindset

👉 That’s what sets you up for long-term success.

💚 There is no prize for rushing, but there is a huge reward for building properly.

🌍 For every dancer, at every stage

No matter where you are right now - Prelim, Open, grades, or somewhere in between - your journey matters.

And it’s not about fitting into one box.

At MWM, we support:

✨ Dancers in every organisation
✨ Dancers at every level
✨ Dancers at every stage of their journey

Because improvement isn’t about where you start - it’s about how you train, think, and grow along the way.

🚀 Your next step

If you’re in Prelim right now, keep this simple:

1️⃣ Choose ONE focus area (technique or mindset)
2️⃣ Stay consistent with your training
3️⃣ Reflect after each class or Feis

Because confidence and progress don’t come from rushing…

👉 They come from understanding.

Prelim is not a step you need to get through…it’s a stage that builds the dancer you’re becoming.

So take your time.

Learn everything you can.

And trust that when you do step into Open…

👉 You’ll be ready for it.

✨ And if you want support with your technique, mindset, and training — wherever you are in your journey — MWM is here for you.
